Jed asked me to post a brief book review on The Great Emergence, the book I held up at announcements a few weeks ago.
Phyllis Tickle, in addition to being an Episcopalian, is probably the most astute observer of contemporary Christian life alive today. (She's in her 70's.) Her most recent book, The Great Emergence, follows on a couple of other books in which she described the changes happening in church and culture at the end of the last millennium. Both were critically acclaimed (and I personally loved them).
This book breaks new ground in identifying the massive cultural shifts of the last hundred years or so and describing the ways they have impacted people's faith and how that is lived in the local church. She puts it all in the context of the fact that every 500 years or so, the entire church enters a period of upheaval and reorganization. We are living through the first time that has happened with the consciousness that it is happening.
If you want to know more, I recommend the site www.thegreatemergence.com which also has some short video clips of Phyllis talking about the book.
In the interest of full disclosure, I think Phyllis is about the wisest soul out there, deeply faithful, and extremely smart. This book only confirmed my opinion.
